The Rise of the Paloma: Celebrating National Tequila Day

bada da-da da da, da da... Tequila!

Tequila has long been associated with the classic Margarita, but as we celebrate National Tequila Day, it’s time to shine a spotlight on another tequila-based star – the Paloma. This refreshing cocktail has quickly become a favourite, especially during the summer months.

While the origins of the Paloma are somewhat mysterious, it’s widely enjoyed in Mexico for its simple yet delightful mix of tequila, grapefruit soda, lime juice, and salt.

Over the past year, the Paloma cocktail has become increasingly popular. Online searches for Paloma cocktails have increased by 80%, and the drink is now featured on menus across the country. This surge in popularity is due to the increasing demand for agave spirits, with the Paloma leading the way.

The Paloma’s unique combination of sweet, sour, and salty flavours makes it incredibly refreshing. It’s easy to make and offers endless opportunities for variations.

How to Make the Perfect Paloma

Ingredients:

  • 50ml tequila blanco

  • 10ml agave syrup

  • 10ml lime juice

  • 60ml pink grapefruit juice

  • Soda water

  • Ice

  • Wedge pink grapefruit

  • Sea salt

STEP 1

Dip the rim of a highball glass in a bowl of water, shake off the excess, then sprinkle a spoonful of salt onto a plate or saucer and dip the glass into that to coat the rim.

STEP 2

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice, then add all the remaining ingredients minus the soda water. Shake until the outside of the shaker feels cold, then strain into your prepared glass. Add a few fresh ice cubes and top with soda water to serve. Garnish with a wedge of grapefruit.
